GSI has begun issuing colour trade-name reports for Pigeon Blood ruby, Royal Blue and Padparadscha sapphire in Jaipur and Mumbai, marking their first issuance in India.
Gemological Science International (GSI) has begun issuing coloured stone reports carrying recognised colour trade names in Jaipur and Mumbai, marking the first time such reports have been issued in India.
The reports cover Pigeon Blood for ruby, and Royal Blue and Padparadscha for sapphire. GSI said the designations are available only for untreated stones. Heated, diffused or otherwise enhanced material is not eligible for the classifications, irrespective of colour.
According to GSI, each trade name is based on documented criteria covering specific ranges of hue, tone and saturation. The assessment is conducted under standardised lighting and supported by spectroscopic and colorimetric analysis.
The system is intended to provide consistent classification across GSI’s laboratories. The organisation said the definitions remain identical at each issuing laboratory through the use of shared master reference sets, calibrated instrumentation and proficiency testing of qualified gemologists.
GSI said the standardisation means that a stone assessed in Jaipur would receive the same determination as one assessed at another GSI laboratory, subject to the same criteria and testing procedures.
The introduction of the reports in India gives the domestic coloured gemstone trade access to GSI’s recognised colour trade-name classifications for eligible untreated rubies and sapphires.
For manufacturers, dealers and retailers, the reports provide documentation of the stone’s colour designation alongside the laboratory’s assessment of its treatment status and other gemological characteristics.
