At the recent Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Sale in Geneva, three top diamond lots, anticipated to easily attract buyers, failed ultimately to sell. The three jewels are- the Lesotho I, which is a 71.73 carat emerald-cut diamond cut from a rough diamond of 601 carats and which had an estimated sale price of between $3 million and $5 million. Another was a 10.48 carat fancy deep blue flawless briolette diamond, carrying an estimated sale price of $6 million to $9 million. A 1.92 carats rare fancy red diamond, of rectangular-cut, having an estimate sale tag of $2.5 million to $3 million also did not sell. The event was successful at selling 60.6 percent of the lot or 225 out of the 371 lots out on offer. The total sales generated was worth $14.84 million. %% What did sell at the auction were an 8.02 carat fancy pink diamond ring sold at $1.32 million, slightly below its pre-auction estimate and was the top lot sold at the auction. To an international buyer went a rare necklace crafted with natural pearls, emeralds and diamonds for $1.32 million, within the lower end of the pre-auction estimate. A ring made of 11.70 carat, D color Golconda type diamond by Jar went to a European private buyer for $996,319. A Harry Winston pear-shaped 10.5 carat, D color, diamond ring was bought for $857,125. %% The low sales at the auction did not have any bearing to the lots put on sale as they were of exceptional quality and had been consigned and valued prior to market slowdown. In comparison to this sale, the Magnificent Jewels auction held in Geneva in May had yielded record sales for the company.
