The Gold Rush Festival will be celebrating its 30th anniversary on September 15th
to pay homage to the McCormick County mines which were the highest gold producing mines in early 50’s. The event would welcome visitors at The Heritage Gold Mine Park, located off S.C. 28, and invite them to try panning for gold and look around the historic mines of McCormick County.
The mines were discovered by Billy Dorn in 1852, and the Heritage Gold Mine was the second-largest gold producer in South Carolina, with $900,000-plus of gold at that time. The mine is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and no mining takes place here anymore.
During the festival, visitors can pan for gold ore and gem stones for $5 each. The authorities are placing small gold pieces and larger gold nuggets just for this weekend. The celebrations also would include knowledge sharing on blacksmithing and soap-making demonstrations and leather crafters.
