Shortage of skilled artisans: Jewellers eye Ankurhati Park in Bengal

Jewellery associations from various states are in talks with Ankurhati Gem & Jewellery Park in Howrah for sourcing skilled artisans

Gold jewellers across the nation are heading to West Bengal in search of skilled karigars in view of the upcoming marriage season, when demand for gold jewellery is set to rise.

Jewellery associations from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala are in talks with Ankurhati Gem & Jewellery Park in Howrah, which imparts coaching in jewellery making, for sourcing skilled artisans on a temporary basis, according to highly placed sources of the Park.  

Jewellers from different states are keen to set up jewellery parks in their respective regions so as to bring all facilities under one umbrella. According to sources. With hallmarking made mandatory, the trade is getting more organised.

The Park imparts training to youths to make them business prepared so that they can get a decent salary. Expert artisans at Ankurhati get Rs 16,000-Rs 17,000 as monthly wages.

Most of the artisans, or karigars, who work in jewellery manufacturing hubs in the nation hail from West Bengal.

There are around 650,000 Bengali artisans working in jewellery manufacturing hubs across the nation.

Skilled jadau jewellery artisans mostly hail from Rajasthan.

Some of the nation’s top-most jewellers, including Tanishq, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Senco Gold & Diamonds, and so forth, have their manufacturing operations in Ankurhati Park.
