Responding swiftly to reports of non-compliance with the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, officials from the Mumbai Branch Office-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted an enforcement raid on Monday, February 20th, 2024, at a jewelry store located in Shanti Nagar, Mira Road.

The raid targeted M/s. Milan Jewellers, uncovering evidence of manufacturing, storage, and sale of gold jewelry/articles without the required BIS hallmark and marking, instead utilizing an outdated scheme of four marks. A significant quantity of such non-compliant gold jewelry was confiscated during the operation, constituting a violation of Section 17(1)(a) of the BIS Act 2016, which carries penalties including imprisonment of up to two years or a minimum fine of Rs. 2,00,000, or both.

Sanjay Vij, Scientist 'F' and Head of BIS Mumbai Branch Office II, disclosed that legal action is underway to prosecute the offenders. Additionally, BIS urges consumers to utilize the BIS CARE App and verify the authenticity of ISI Marks on products through the official BIS website. Any instances of non-compliance or misuse of ISI Marks should be promptly reported to the relevant authorities, with assurance of confidentiality maintained for the source of information.
