Sabyasachi Mukherjee and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have unveiled a six-piece jewellery collection drawing on imperial medallions, architecture, statuary and religious imagery from the museum’s collection.
Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has collaborated with The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York on a six-piece high jewellery collection, marking the jewellery debut of the partnership.
The collection comprises one pair of earrings, two wrist cuffs and three necklaces. The designs draw from objects and motifs represented in The Met’s holdings, including imperial medallions, architectural elements, ancient statuary and religious iconography.
According to JCK, Mukherjee chose jewellery as the starting point for the collaboration because of the technical difficulty involved in translating museum artworks into wearable pieces. The designer explains the approach in an accompanying inspiration video.
The collaboration places Sabyasachi’s jewellery business in direct association with one of the world’s major art museums, using objects from its collection as references for contemporary jewellery design.
The partnership follows Sabyasachi’s previous engagement with The Met through the museum’s fashion and cultural events. The designer has also presented his jewellery and couture through international platforms, including the Met Gala.
For the jewellery industry, the collaboration highlights the use of museum collections as a source for high jewellery design, while bringing historical motifs and architectural references into a limited six-piece format.
The collection also adds to Sabyasachi’s international jewellery positioning, following the expansion of the brand’s retail and jewellery operations outside India.
The six-piece debut establishes jewellery as the first product category in the Sabyasachi–Met collaboration, with the museum’s art collection serving as the primary design reference for the launch.
