The family behind GVK Group, Sanjay and Pinky Reddy, is set to enter the high-jewellery space with a boutique-led model focused on curated collections, design identity and exclusivity, with Mumbai identified as the first location.
An infrastructure group’s next move into jewellery is drawing attention to a different approach to India’s organised jewellery market. GVK Group, associated with Sanjay and Pinky Reddy, is entering the high-jewellery segment with a maison-style retail concept that prioritises curated collections over conventional volume-led jewellery retailing.
The venture marks a distinct positioning within a market where several large corporate groups have expanded their jewellery businesses through national chains, bridal retail and large-format stores.
The proposed format centres on curated jewellery lines, each with its own design identity and narrative, rather than a large inventory of designs sold primarily by weight.
The approach draws on the model followed by established European luxury jewellery houses, where signature collections, craftsmanship and brand identity form an integral part of the proposition.
Pinky Reddy’s longstanding interest in fine jewellery adds a personal dimension to the venture. However, the defining question for the business will be how it translates that interest into a distinct retail proposition for high-net-worth consumers.
Mumbai has been identified as the first location for the venture, with a flagship boutique planned around the high-end positioning. Expansion into the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region is being considered as a possible next step.
The proposed footprint suggests a selective expansion strategy rather than a rapid, multi-store rollout. Such a model would place greater emphasis on exclusivity, collection development and the customer experience than on store count.
The proposed entry adds another dimension to corporate participation in India’s jewellery market.
Tata Group operates Tanishq and CaratLane, while Reliance Industries has a presence through Reliance Jewels. Aditya Birla Group entered the market with Indriya, and Kothari Group has pursued the lab-grown diamond segment through Keemti.
GVK’s proposed high-jewellery maison would occupy a different position, targeting the luxury end of the market rather than relying primarily on scale or mass-market reach.
The venture’s progress will be watched for what it signals about the evolution of India’s luxury jewellery sector. Its positioning raises a larger question: can an Indian jewellery house build the collection-led identity and exclusivity associated with established international maisons?
The Mumbai launch and any subsequent GCC expansion will be key developments to watch as the concept takes shape.
