The U.S. imported polished diamonds worth $1.35 billion in April 2010, indicating a 71 percent rise in value year-on-year, reports say. In terms of volume the country imported 1.041 million carats reflecting a 44 percent growth. The average price on diamonds rose 19 percent to $1,294.68 per carat, as compared to last year. Exports of polished diamonds rose 65 percent to $973 million, with net polished imports ( calculated as excess of imports over exports) increased 91 percent to $376 million. %% Rough diamond imports rose 90 percent to $40 million and average price per carat of the diamonds rose 112.7 percent to $3,434.11 per carat as compared to April 2009. The net rough imports (value of imports exceeding exports) rose 56 percent to $14 million. %% The country’s April net diamond account (value of imports of polished and rough less total exports), rose 89 percent to $390 million.
