Italian jewellery industry predicts a mellow 2008

Unstable gold prices, US recession, account for anticipated low output

In the 2006-2007financial year, mineral revenues received from royalties, dividends, along with the annual charges for mining leases increased by 13% that last financial year, owing to the high sales volumes during the year. Also, 65 tonnes of semi-precious stones were recorded for 2006.

Botswana's Department of Mines has noted an overall increase in the diamond production and issue of mining licenses during the 2006 -2007 year. Diamond production was higher to 34,293 million carats during in 2006, higher that the comparative to 31.8 million carats produced in 2005.
Applications for mining licenses increased by 22% as compared to the previous year and 76% of the 127 mining licenses and minerals permits for small mines were issued within the targeted 13 days, while the others took 20 days.
