According to reports, 93 child labourers were rescued from gold and jewellery factories in Karol Bagh, New Delhi.%%The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Labour Department, Delhi Police and a local non-governmental organisation, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, which had been tipped off about the illegal sweatshops.%%Fifty seven of the 93 children are reportedly below the age of 14, some as young as 9 or 10. Labour and industry minister, Mangat Ram Singhal, told Hindustan Times that the children were locked inside rooms in difficult and hazardous conditions.%%
An investigative team from Bachpan Bachao Andolan found that the children were exposed to chemical fumes, precious metals dust and acid. The minister said more such raids would take place as the government believed in “zero tolerance†towards child labour
