Originally introduced as a pilot project in 2011 via Circular No. 37/2011 – Customs dated August 23, 2011, the AEO program has emerged as a crucial component of the broader ease of doing business initiative, simplifying export operations across various sectors and yielding substantial time and cost savings for exporters.

Despite its proven benefits, the gem and jewellery sector had been initially excluded from the AEO program. However, through proactive engagement with relevant ministries, the GJEPC successfully advocated for the sector's inclusion in the program. As a result, the Ministry of Finance has announced that units within the gem and jewellery industry are now eligible to apply for participation in the AEO program, unlocking associated benefits for them.

In response to this development, the GJEPC recently organized an informative Outreach Program focused on obtaining Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status. Held on March 18, 2024, at the Bharat Diamond Bourse, the event brought together industry stakeholders keen on enhancing international trade operations, strengthening supply chain security, and bolstering global competitiveness.

The initiative has already garnered significant interest, with 20 companies having applied for AEO status. Notably, Asian Star, a leading diamond and diamond jewellery manufacturer, has been granted AEO Status, marking a historic milestone as the first recipient in the Indian gem and jewellery industry.

The GJEPC extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Government, especially the Ministry of Finance, for heeding the council's request and bringing the gem and jewellery industry under the purview of the AEO program. This significant step will undoubtedly enhance the sector's competitiveness and facilitate smoother international trade operations in the years to come.
