The International Gemological Institute (IGI) inaugurated its second laboratory in Jaipur on January 29, 2026, expanding its operational presence in North India. The new facility is located in Sitapura, Jaipur’s dedicated gems and jewellery manufacturing hub.

Jaipur is a major centre for coloured gemstone trading, uncut polki and fine jewellery manufacturing. According to IGI, the Sitapura location allows closer access to manufacturers and exporters, enabling faster grading turnaround times and improved operational efficiency.

The laboratory will provide IGI’s full range of certification services for diamonds, coloured gemstones and jewellery. The facility is equipped with analytical tools including Raman spectrometry, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence to analyse gemstones’ structure, composition and inclusions for origin and treatment determination.

Tehmasp Printer of IGI said, “At IGI, we recognised the global shift in consumer preferences early on, especially the rising demand for coloured gemstones. This surge is being driven by increasing consumer interest in unique fusion designs that combine multiple precious gemstones, personalised jewellery, and a growing appreciation for the rarity and beauty of coloured stones.”

He added, “Origin determination and treatment detection in coloured gemstones are highly specialised processes that require sophisticated analytical tools. With our new laboratory in Jaipur, IGI is further strengthening its ability to deliver this precision at scale.”

The Sitapura centre will also house IGI’s School of Gemology, offering certification and training programmes for the regional trade. With this opening, IGI now operates 35 laboratories across 10 countries and runs 21 Schools of Gemology globally.
