More than 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces and artefacts have been hallmarked with a six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number since the system was introduced on September 1, 2025, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Silver hallmarking has been voluntary in India since October 2005. The HUID system enables consumers to verify the purity and traceability of hallmarked silver articles.

Under the system, hallmarked silver articles carry the BIS Standard Mark, the word “SILVER”, the purity grade and a laser-marked six-digit alphanumeric HUID.

The southern region accounts for 62% of silver hallmarking, followed by the western region at 18% and the central region at 10%.

More than 25,000 silver jewellers have registered with BIS for hallmarking. The country currently has 341 Assaying and Hallmarking Centres operating across 102 districts.

The 925 and 800 purity grades together account for nearly 95% of hallmarked silver articles.

A BIS market survey covering 4,971 responses across 30 states and Union Territories found that articles weighing between 10 and 50 grams account for nearly 74% of reported demand. Anklets or payals, chains, toe rings, finger rings and bracelets were among the commonly sold silver items.

BIS has advised consumers to purchase hallmarked silver jewellery from registered jewellers, verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app and retain the purchase invoice.
