The Government of Thailand had recently announced an Emergency Decree on September 2, 2008, following political demonstrations in Bangkok. The event occurring just prior to the forthcoming 42nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, did raise some frowns and eyebrows in the industry. To clarify this situation, the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), the organiser of the trade show, has reaffirmed that the show will be held on its scheduled five days between September 11-15. The CEO of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, Somchai Phornchindarak, wrote an official letter for the trade, assuring the visitors and exhibitors of complete safety at the venue and during the five days. The venue of the trade show, at Impact Challenger, Bangkok, is far from the area of demonstrations. The supplier area too is located at Silom road, Sukhumvit road etc. far off from the protests, as emergency has been limited to the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, and within Bangkok to only a few areas. Security has been beefed up and TGJTA has arranged for shuttle buses throughout the event for international attendees. %% Phornchindarak also explained about the new Business Matching Service, which is currently accepted by authoritative buyers from over 100 companies across 40 countries, in effect empahsising the security of transactions at the fair. The fair has been planned with over 2000 networking sessions. The ongoing protest or Emergency Decree has not dampened the spirit of TGJTA to invite the world to Thailand’s grand heritage in gemstone, and the body appeals to the industry to participate at the event in complete faith and anticipation of a worthwhile experience.
