Surat, India’s prime diamond cutting and polishing trade is seeing a silver lining in handling larger stones, as compared to its reputation of dealing only with small stones. This is a result of the economic crisis pressurising the cutting and polishing centres in Belgium and Israel with increased labour cost and fall out of labour. As a result, the attention is coming onto Surat, a city well versed with handling majority of the diamonds in the world. The recent feat of KARP Impex winning a 128.47 carat stone in a bid in South Africa, and bringing it to Surat for cutting and polishing, exemplified the ability of the city to deal with such large stones. %% Although India has had a smaller share of dealings with larger carat stones, which account for 30 percent or Rs 14,000 crore of its Rs 45,000 crore-diamond industry. But, Surat has been harnessing its capability of talent with investment in advanced technology to increase its portfolio to larger stones. %% Diamantaires in the city are looking at also benefiting from reduced costs and increased profits when dealing with larger stones.
