The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will now include the geographic origin determinations in its emerald identification reports from December 1, 2006. GIA has always maintained that the intrinsic quality of an emerald is the most important factor in determining its market value. %%The origin of the stones largely effect its market valuation, therefore it becomes essential to study such details closely. Initially GIA will start its services from the distinction of emeralds from Colombia, gradually enveloping all the other localities.%%The fee for the above mentioned services on emeralds would depend on the weight of the emerald being tested. %%This is just an added service by the institute; the standard emerald identification without the stated service is also available.
