Gemological Science International (GSI), in collaboration with Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, conducted a Gem Identification Masterclass aimed at addressing the growing demand for coloured gemstone expertise in the Indian jewellery market.

The programme was developed for industry professionals seeking to enhance their technical understanding of coloured gemstones. The curriculum included gemstone identification, differentiation between natural stones, simulants and synthetics, treatment detection, geographic origin factors, and value assessment.

Participants received hands-on training using professional gemological instruments to support accurate identification, reflecting GSI’s laboratory-focused approach to education. The initiative aligns with increasing market complexity and the need for technical proficiency across the supply chain.

“The rise in demand for colored gemstones is rapidly emerging as one of the most significant trends in the global jewelry market, and India is at the center of this shift,” said Ravi Menon of Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC. “At Mega CFC, we are pleased to collaborate with GSI… to refine the skills of industry professionals… The response to this program has been overwhelming.”

Ramit Kapur of GSI India said, “This program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence required to evaluate gemstone purchases and deliver appropriate quality to their customers.” He added that the combination of theoretical learning and practical exposure enables professionals to operate with greater clarity.

The sessions were led by GSI instructors with experience in gemology, gemstone analysis, and professional education. Participants also accessed GSI’s global research data and laboratory capabilities to support learning outcomes.

With the coloured gemstone segment becoming more competitive, the programme focuses on building technical capabilities for manufacturers and retailers. The initiative forms part of GSI’s broader effort to advance gemological education aligned with evolving industry requirements.
