GSI and Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC conducted a gemstone identification masterclass for jewellery professionals, focusing on gemstone analysis, treatment detection, traceability, and technical education amid evolving consumer demand in India.
Gemological Science International (GSI), in collaboration with Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, conducted a new batch of its “Gem Identification Masterclass” focused on gemstone education for the Indian jewellery industry. Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC is an initiative of GJEPC supported by India’s commerce ministry.
The programme addressed growing demand for technical understanding in the coloured gemstone segment as consumer preferences increasingly shift toward individuality, rarity, and transparency. The changing market environment is influencing gemstone sourcing, quality evaluation, and customer communication strategies across the trade.
The masterclass was designed for industry professionals and focused on practical gemological training. Topics included gemstone identification, separation of natural gemstones from simulants and synthetics, treatment detection, geographic origin analysis, and value-related factors. Participants also received hands-on exposure to professional gemological instruments and gemstone analysis techniques under the guidance of GSI instructors.
According to the organizers, the programme reflected increasing interest among industry participants in authenticity, traceability, and scientific evaluation of gemstones, which are becoming more important in building consumer trust and long-term brand credibility. Ashraf Motiwala of AS Motiwala Fine Jewellery said, “What made this program valuable was the practical exposure and the opportunity to experience gemstone identification firsthand. The hands-on learning approach gave deeper clarity on how complex the colored gemstone category truly is today.”
Ravi Menon, CEO, Bharat Ratnam Mega CFC, said India’s leadership in gemstones and jewellery manufacturing requires continued investment in education and skill development to align with evolving global standards. Ramit Kapur, Managing Director, GSI India, said retailers and jewellery professionals are seeking deeper technical understanding as consumers ask more informed questions regarding gemstones and sourcing practices. The organizations stated that initiatives focused on technical education, transparency, and professional training are expected to play a larger role as the coloured gemstone market becomes increasingly sophisticated.
